Cultured pearls are often strung on silk thread with a knot between each pearl. This prevents damage to the pearls caused by rubbing against each other and wearing throught the lustrous pearl nacre.  Knotting also  prevents your pearls from cascading all over the floor if the silk thread were to break.

Silk thread is susceptible to wear and tear, especially if you wear your pearl necklace often. The fine silk can also stretch and weaken over time.  If you see extra space between the knots that separate the pearls from each other, it may be time to have your pearls restrung.
